Run for Ovarian Cancer

Susan Sandoval Run banner

Susan Sandoval Run for Ovarian Cancer

The Susan Sandoval Foundation for Ovarian Cancer was created to increase awareness of the signs, symptoms and risk factors for ovarian cancer as well as other gynecologic cancers (uterine, cervix, vulvar, vaginal and fallopian tube). The goals of the foundation are to educate and improve the care of women diagnosed with gynecologic cancers and focus on innovative research in this field. Susan Sandoval was diagnosed with stage three ovarian cancer in May 2005 and died May 2007, at the age of 50. She worked as a nurse at LDS and Primary Children’s hospitals for 21 years. She had many friends, talked passionately about patient care and rights, and had incredible strength within her to always look at the positive in life and make the best of every day.

In 2007, the Foundation hosted the inaugural Susan Sandoval Run for Ovarian Cancer. This event raised over $13,000 and had over 400 runners and walkers.

In 2008, with the help of our sponsors, we hope to raise over $20,000 and have more than 500 runners and walkers. The race will be held on September 13th, 2008 at Sugarhouse Park.

The proceeds from the race will be used to increase awareness of the signs, symptoms and risk factors for ovarian cancer as well as other gynecologic cancers (uterine, cervix, vulvar, vaginal and fallopian tube); and, also, to support innovative research in prevention, early detection, and treatment of gynecologic cancer.

The First Annual Taylorsville Big Give, A BIG Fundraiser for a GREAT LITTLE Kid: Saturday, May 31st from 4:00pm – 9:00pm

The City of Taylorsville Youth Council sponsors several fundraisers a year for worthy causes. This year, one of the events they have chosen to sponsor is the Taylorsville Big Give, a fundraiser for Jonah Gomez, son of Jessica Kasparian-Gomez.

This evening’s events will include a guest appearance by the Utah Jazz Bear, music, food, carnival games, inflatables, climbing wall, face painting...an enjoyable evening for everyone.

We will also be holding a silent auction. Some of the items include: A Deer Valley Getaway, White Gold Diamond Pendant by Passey & Son Jewelers (valued at $800), and Bike Packages by Edge Composites (valued at $10,000).

There is no charge for admission to the event. Donations are gladly accepted.

Jonah is a four year old boy who has two rare blood disorders, and a heart condition, requiring frequent transfusions. He is the only known person in the world to have both disorders.

We are holding a fundraiser to offset medical bills incurred by Jonah’s medical condition, and to raise money for bone marrow/stem cell and cord blood awareness, as Jonah may benefit from a stem cell transplant in the future.

The Taylorsville Big Give will be held May 31, 2008 from 4:00-9:00pm at the Taylorsville High School Gymnasium, located at 5225 S. Redwood Road , Taylorsville , Utah .

Race for the Cure

~We had the Race for the Cure on Saturday morning which was great, as always. From what I hear there were roughly 16,000 participants here in Salt Lake and it was amazing to see so many people out supporting the cause. As usual a few times during the race, we both were very moved by the “in celebration of” signs on peoples back… seeing the little kids with signs that refer to their mothers and grandmothers are always the hardest for me. I think this year it all hit a little closer to home for me than in years past… I hope that a cure will come very soon.

~ A couple weeks ago there was a huge pet adoption fair that we stopped by to play with some of the puppies and check out all the cute dogs. This past weekend we decided to do that again – so we stopped by the adoption fair they were having in the parking lot at IKEA. There weren’t very many dogs there and we were happy to hear that a few had already found new homes. We enjoyed meeting cute little Pacino and Cody and playing with them for a bit. They were such sweet little puppies! Being the dog lovers that we both are, we have a really hard time seeing the dogs in those little cages and if we could, we would take them all home! We hope that they all find loving homes soon!

Help Raise Money for Cancer Research

A note from my friend Beth -

Hello Friends-

We (my friend Alisa & I) have decided to fundraise for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society as members of Team in Training (once again). We will be running in the Ogden Half Marathon on May 17th. This will be Alisa's 2nd event with the team.....and my 4th event with the team.

We could use all the support we can get!

Our goal is to raise $2000 total for this event -to help fund very important life saving research. So far we have raised a little over $1100. I feel very passionate about this cause as both of my parents are battling different forms of Cancer. I strongly believe that with all of your help - we CAN make a positive impact and prevent this horrible disease from taking more lives.

Help us to get funding into the hands of the researchers who will one day find a cure!! Every dollar -no matter how large, or how small will help find a cure.

You can donate on our fundraising page at:

http://www.active.com/donate/tntdms/AlisaandBeth

We appreciate your support very much!!! THANK YOU!!

Love,
Beth

A poem written by a little girl dying of cancer....

SLOW DANCE

Have you ever watched kids

On a merry-go-round?

Or listened to the rain

Slapping on the ground?

Ever followed a butterfly's erratic flight?

Or gazed at the sun into the fading night?

You better slow down.

Don't dance so fast.

Time is short.

The music won't last.

Do you run through each day

On the fly?

When you ask How are you?

Do you hear the reply?

When the day is done

Do you lie in your bed

With the next hundred chores

Running through your head?

You'd better slow down

Don't dance so fast.

Time is short.

The music won't last

Ever told your child,

We'll do it tomorrow?

And in your haste,

Not see his sorrow?

Ever lost touch,

Let a good friendship die

Cause you never had time

To call and say, 'Hi'

You'd better slow down

Don't dance so fast.

Time is short.

The music won't last.

When you run so fast to get somewhere

You miss half the fun of getting there.

When you worry and hurry through your day,

It is like an unopened gift....

Thrown away.

Life is not a race.

Do take it slower

Hear the music

Before the song is over.

This class is designed to educate the attendee on the virtues of sustainable farming. By practicing environmentally friendly farming we yield truer flavors. The sense of place is realized and authentic wines are created. Wines we will taste: Bonterra, Frogs Leap, King Estate and Fetzer.

The class will be taught by Joe Padilla. Joe has been in the wine and hospitality industries for 20 years. He has worked as a Manager, Chef and Sommelier, as well as, owned a restaurant in Salt Lake City. After closing his restaurant he opened a wine brokerage which was absorbed by Young's Market Company, which represents over 300 wineries. Young's was established in 1888 in California and is one of the largest wine and spirits wholesalers in the United States.

*Beer Tasting Class 6:00pm (separate ticket required-$15/person)
UTAH BREWERS COOPERATIVE
Dan Burick the brewmaster at Utah Brewers Cooperative will lead a tasting of 4 beers: Wasatch Pumpkin Ale, Squatters Organic Amber Ale, Wasatch 1st Ammendment Lager and Squatters Full Suspension Pale Ale. We'll also have a general discussion on what beer is, what ingredients are used to make it and about the brewing process.

Utah Brewers Cooperative was created in 2000 by the separate owners of Wasatch Beers and Squatters Beers. Both sets of owners, having been friends for years, were tired of being competitors on the streets. So they cam together to create a brewery to make both lines of beers for the public under one roof. The economics of bringing the two together was pure genius and has been a total success. The pubs are still run by the separate owners, but all come together for the co-op.

All proceeds benefit Susan G. Komen for the Cure with 75% of the funds remaining in Utah to fund breast cancer education, treatment and screening programs. The other 25% of the net proceeds is sent to Komen headquarters to fund their Research Grants Award program.

Help Fight Breast Cancer ~

A favor to ask, it only takes a minute....

The Breast Cancer site is having trouble getting enough people to click on their site daily to meet their quota of donating at least one free mammogram a day to an underprivileged woman. It takes less than a minute to go to their site and click on 'donating a mammogram' for free (pink window in the middle).

This doesn't cost you a thing. Their corporate sponsors /advertisers use the number of daily visits to donate mammogram in exchange for advertising.

Here's the web site! Pass it along to people you know...
http://www.thebreastcancersite.com/

Also, check out the other tabs on the site to help fight hunger, promote literacy, and/or to provide food and shelter for animals. If you visit the site daily (or even weekly) you can help all of these very worthy causes - Just be sure to click on that button that says "Click here to give!"

Be a part of the cure..

Come be a part of the cure!
I have two wonderful suggestions for things that you can do in the next two weeks to be a part of the cure! Whether it be Asthma or Breast Cancer.... you can make a difference in the lives of many people by participating in either event, and we'd love to have you as part of the SKIDS Team for one... Or even better, for both!

~~ OPTION 1
Saturday, May 5th -
Blow the Whistle on Asthma at the American Lung Association's Asthma Walk at Sugar House Park, Salt Lake City
Registration: 8:00 am
Event start time: 9:00 am
Until recently, I did not know that asthma is the leading chronic illness among children and the cause of more than 5,000 deaths in the U.S. each year. I'm sure there are many more people who are unaware of the devastating effects of this chronic lung disease.
Therefore, I have signed up as a Team Captain in the American Lung Association of Utah's Blow the Whistle on Asthma Walk 2007 and I am recruiting team members to join me at the Walk and help raise funds for this worthy cause.
Please visit our team web page at http://www.mrsnv.com/evt/e01/team.jsp?id=1425&tid=333 and follow the instructions to join our Walk team.

~~ OPTION 2
Saturday, May 12th -
Race for the Cure at the Komen Foundation Breast Cancer walk/run
Start Time: 8:30am (End Time: 12:00pm)
Location: The Gateway at South Temple and 400 West in Salt Lake City
It's not only women that are affected by breast cancer! Their families and friends are all affected too. In honor of all the children that have been affected because their Mom, Grandmother, Aunt, Sister, or Friend has suffered, died or hopefully recovered from Breast Cancer... please join the SKIDS Team for the Race for the Cure!

Please go to one of the following pages to register or support our team:
http://race.komenslc.org/goto/skids
or to http://race.komenslc.org/goto/jennifer777
You may know that one in eight women will be stricken with breast cancer in her lifetime. What you may not know is that you can help these women and thousands of others in the fight against breast cancer.
On May 12, 2007, I will be participating in the Komen Salt Lake City Race for the Cure® with a great team of dedicated people. Join the fight by registering as part of our team or even individually or by supporting our efforts with a pledge or a contribution. The money raised through the Race will fund vital education, screening and treatment programs for underserved women in our own community and support the national search for a cure.
We need your support! Every step counts!
